Head Conservator, Stephanie Hornbeck introduced us to the origin and details of the project. Then we met project staff who provided more information about procedures, data collected, limits of treatment, etc. A conservation lab has been set up in the Native American Gallery. There, staff engaged with CACG members, discussing particular artifacts, interactions with Native American tribal representatives, and about past practices that complicate handling of the artifacts. Extensive research on many of the artifacts is necessary since some have been on display since the 1940's. Sometimes, costumes on mannequins is incorrect, with items combined from different tribes.
